Clay Stafford, An Overview by Dalmatian Press Editor Kathryn Knight

An Introduction by

FROM DALMATIAN PRESS EDITOR

KATHRYN KNIGHT

I once described Clay Stafford as a Renaissance man.

Maybe that was too high-falutin’ because the response from one person (in a slow Southern drawl) was: “What’s a RandySauce man?”

I didn’t miss the proverbial beat.

“A spicy, multi-flavored, engrossing, creative thinker who can charm, entice, motivate, and seduce—yeah, maybe seduce—his audience with finesse and smarts.”

It fit.

Clay is a RandySauce man.

No one can begin to fully know Clay because he’s got so many interests, talents, and layers.  (Plus, most RandySauce men prefer a bit of mystique.)

As an editor I’ve worked with Clay on several book projects.  His style is refreshing—staccato punches delivered with well-timed intention that keep you turning the page and wanting more.

And Clay is a pro.

He understands audience, budgets, and deadlines.  He is broad-viewed, yet detail-sensitive.

As a friend, I’ve come to appreciate the old-world gentility that lurks behind the driven, competitive, analytical phenomenon known as Clay Stafford. (How does such a busy guy find time to write thank you cards and notes of encouragement at exactly the right moments, and still manage to whip up homemade grape jelly, anyhow?)

Since appearing in his first production in 1972 and starting his own professional production company in 1978 at age sixteen (The Clay Stafford Company), Clay has gone on to accomplish many things over the past several years.

He writes prolifically as an award-winning professional screenwriter, poet, author, essayist, playwright, songwriter, and composer (orchestral material).

He’s a theater critic, film critic, and book reviewer.

He heads American Blackguard, Inc., which is a production-literary-music company combined, with all sorts of support services.

He directs, acts, and produces films, television shows, and staged productions.

He’s been a music producer (soundtracks and songs), music arranger, and a music supervisor for film and television productions.

(This website doesn’t begin to include all his credits and experiences.)

What else?

He has been a book editor and publisher, dancer, singer, mime, radio DJ, musician, (catching my breath...) Hollywood script consultant, web page designer and publisher, cinematographer, film / TV editor, fine arts painter, graphic artist, still photographer, film & television production CEO, college professor, and public speaker.

(No wonder he always seems to be in a hurry when he thinks no one is looking.)

He works over sixty-five hours per week, doesn’t take vacations, and keeps a timecard on himself (and he’s the boss).  He’ll quickly praise the contributions of others before lauding his own involvement.  He often speaks of the “team” as if he’s only along to keep them company.

Clay’s work can be found in 14 languages;  in bookstores, video stores, magazines, newspapers, and on the Internet. His books have sold over 350,000 copies.  When he has time to write them, his periodical writings alone reach a potential 1.2 million readers every month.

He’s a visionary with a quick, inventive mind.  His work is charged with intensity and seasoned with experience, creativity, humor, and intelligence.  And he’s humble and private.  Ask him what he’s working on and he won’t tell you.  Meeting him one would never know all the things he has achieved.

What else can I say?  Clay Stafford is a multi-talented and amazingly accomplished artist.

Ya know… a RandySauce Man.
